Why Nigerian Economy will not Grow an Highlight by Aliko Dangote

The President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, says the availability of consumer credit facility is an important option in fighting corruption in the country.

Mr Dangote said this on Saturday in Lagos at a consultative roundtable titled, "Going for Growth" with some economic stakeholders.

He said that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and commercial banks should develop consumer credit products to encourage low-income earners to engage in loan taking.

He also identified a lack of policy implementation as the biggest challenge in the country.

"How do you have economic growth without power? So, no power, no growth because without power there can't be growth.

"Egypt increased its electricity by 10 gigawatts, which is equivalent to 10,000 megawatts in 18 months.

"In Nigeria, we have been struggling for 18 years without adding 1,000 megawatts and we have spent about three times above Egypt, why?

"So, I think we all need to be concerned about that."

Mr Dangote advised that the country needed to promote import substitution for foreign exchange accumulation through proceeds from exports.

He called for a public-private partnership to boost the non-oil sector of the economy and added that Nigerians should invest in the development of the non-oil sector which had been left in the hands of foreigners.

"Government need to encourage non-oil sector growth rather than depending on proceeds from crude oil to pay salaries.

"Proceeds from crude oil sale should be for major investment in the country," he added.

He urged the federal government to improve more on the power sector, saying "no business will thrive with business owners generating powers themselves."

Mr Dangote said that all stakeholders must come together and support the government in finding a solution to power challenges in the country.

Apart from power, Mr Dangote suggested that government focuses more on three areas which include finance, manufacturing and agriculture.

According to him, Asian Tigers concentrated on these three sectors for them to be where they are.

He further urged the government to focus more on the fiscal policies for the country to move to the next level.

The business mogul said by next year, the country would have exported eight million tonnes of cement to African countries from the present six million tonnes.

Mr Dangote added that Nigeria would also be the biggest exporter of fertilizers in Sub-Sahara Africa.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, Jim Ovia, noted that government policies had supported the production of petroleum, cement and fertilizers.

Mr Ovia commended the government on broadband penetration in the country, saying it had boosted banking activities.

He supported Dangote on the need for consumer credit and said banks were doing their best on it.

Mr Ovia, however. noted that the process had been slow because of the challenges associated with people given accurate data for Know-Your Customers (KYC) process.

Also, the former Managing Director of Stanbic IBTC, Peterside Atedo, urged the CBN to continue with the effort taken in reducing inflation rate from 18 per cent to as low as 11.37 per cent as at April 2019.

Mr Peterside said the CBN should use the same pace to bring the country's inflation rate to a single digit.

Baba-Ahmed's Plan for Buhari

A Presidential aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and former senator from Kaduna State, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has revealed what he will do to President Muhammadu Buhari if he emerges the flag-bearer of the PDP.
Baba-Ahmed said it would be so easy for him to defeat and send Buhari back to Daura, Katsina State if the PDP grants him the party’s sole ticket.
In a statement yesterday in . to Buhari’s declaration, Baba-Ahmed said, “I have never been afraid of incumbency.
“I am a Nigerian and I am contesting on the same Electoral Act and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, unless they are going to violate it, which we shall challenge.
“Muhammadu Buhari is welcome to contest for the Presidency in 2019 and I think it is a healthy practice to have a gentleman of his age, his mould and people who have been in power for the past 50 years contest.
“But as for popularity, it is highly arguable. I think the support of many Nigerians has been taken for granted.

“And I think the average Nigerian has now become more intelligent politically and more aware. That political awareness is what I think leaders who have been in power and think automatically that without people making recourse, they will just endorse them and support them.
“That is the awareness that they are taking for granted. What I have learnt in my few years in life is that never take people for granted.”
According to him, Buhari who only defeated his closest rival, Goodluck Jonathan by 2.5 million votes in 2015, would not have a free ride in 2019.
He added, “Absolutely, he will not have it easy. Do not forget that President Buhari had contested three elections and lost until a certain action by the PDP made many members to exit the party and go
to the APC, and made him to win. APC is practically PDP.
“Even Buhari’s best, his very best, he won by only 2.5 million. Now, he is in about his worst, with the economy on its knees, the insecurity, the herdsmen issue that he has not attended to, the educational system and millions of jobs lost, while the people’s awareness is on the increase".

FASTEST WAY TO MIGRATE TO CANADA

EXPRESS ENTRY
PLAN A: Try EXPRESS ENTRY
The Express Entry system has 2 steps:
STEP 1: Potential candidates shall complete an online Express Entry profile. Once the system is online, potential candidates will complete a secure form that they will use to provide information about their – skills, work experience, language ability, education, and other details that will help CIC assess their case. There will be no deadline to complete a profile, however you need to follow the following to complete your Express Entry profile:
Take a Language Test, result of this test will be used by CIC to determine if the candidate is eligible to immigrate to Canada under one of the federal programs that are part of Express Entry. Language Test is a third-party test outside CIC, for list of acceptable third party organizations, refer to CIC website.
Candidates who are educated outside Canada must get an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) of their completed foreign educational credentials. Assessment can be arranged with designated organizations.
Candidates with at least 1 year of recent work experience obtained in Canada or work experience is in skilled trade may not need assessment however, to increase chances of being invited to apply you may need to have your foreign education assessed. For further information regarding application being accepted as skilled trades, refer to www.cic.gc.ca.
The candidates need to know the skill type of the job of his work experience is in (as well as the job you plan to have in Canada, if they are different). To find out whether your work experience is valid under one of the three federal programs, use Canada’s job classification system (the National Occupational Classification, or NOC).
Those who meet the criteria will be accepted into a pool of candidates and there will be no caps on the number of candidates that will be accepted to the pool. However, entry into the Express Entry pool does not guarantee a candidate will be issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence. Invited candidates still have to meet eligibility and admissibility requirements under Canada’s immigration law.
Anyone who does not have a job offer supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) (if you need one), or a nomination from a province or territory, must register with Employment and Social Development Canada’s (ESDC) Job Bank. Job Bank will help connect Express Entry candidates with eligible employers in Canada.
STEP 2: The highest-ranking candidates in the pool will be invited to apply for permanent residence. Candidates who meet the criteria will be accepted into a pool of possible candidates for immigration to Canada. Candidates will be ranked against others in the pool using a point-based system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Points are awarded using the information in their profile. Candidates with the highest scores in the pool will be issued an ITA. Candidates will be awarded points for: a job offer, and/or a nomination from a province or territory, and/or skills and experience factors.

A maximum of 600 points will be given to candidates who receive a permanent job offer from a Canadian employer or who have been nominated for immigration by a province or territory. Up to 500 points will be allotted for age, education level, language proficiency and work experience in Canada, while a maximum of 100 points will be allotted for a combination of education level, foreign work experience and a certificate in the trades.
When candidates are taken from the pool, it will be called a “draw”. CIC will select the highest-ranking candidates from the pool through regular “draws” and invite them to apply to immigrate as a permanent resident.
If someone is invited to apply, they will have 60 days to submit an online application for permanent residence. CIC will process the majority of complete applications (meaning those with all the necessary supporting documents) in six months or less.
Please note: Candidates can stay in the pool for up to 12 months. If they do not get an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence within 12 months of submitting an Express Entry profile, they will have to submit a new profile. If they still meet the criteria, they can re-enter the pool.
Successful applicants will have to show proof they have enough funds to support themselves and their family. They will also have to undergo health exams and security checks.
