Bankers go on strike in Ogun

Banks in Ijebu and Remo divisions of Ogun State have embarked on indefinite strike because of the porous security situation in the state.

The state, in recent times, had been the abode of armed robbers, who raid banks and get away with the loot.

The chairman, Ijebuland Bankers’ Forum, Mr Olusegun Olusoga, who disclosed this on Wednesday at a press conference in Abeokuta, said the action became necessary in view of the spate of robbery cases in the state.

He lamented the "slow motion" attitude of the Senator Ibikunle Amosun-led administration to put in place adequate security equipment that could be used in combating the menace of armed robbery.

He wondered why the state government had not provided the Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and deployed the patrol vans parked within the premises of the state secretariat in Abeokuta to the banks in the state.

Olusoga further said that banks should desist from rendering skeletal services to customers while the strike lasted, warning bank staff to stay away from bank premises until their demands were met by the state government.

The chairman also warned against loading of Automated Teller Machine (ATM) until further directive from the forum.

He said, “any robbery attack arising as a result of the culpability of any bank shall be viewed as connivance and collaboration with the robbers.

“We would not defend or issue any statement to absolve any bank official who, out of carelessness, allows his bank to be robbed through the revdering of skeletal services.”

In the same vein, bankers in Sagamu division of the state have been directed to proceed on indefinite strike.

The chairman, Sagamu Bankers’ Forum, Mr Tunde Onadeko, said his members had resolved to throw their weight behind their colleagues in Ijebu division.
